The History of KAG

The Klingon Assault Group began in the Summer 1989 when John Halvorson and some friends, sitting around a kitchen table somewhere in Michigan decided to start a new Klingon club that focused on playing Klingon by dressing up in costumes and going out into the world, instead of the mail-based role playing groups that were common at the time.

That fall, John and his fiends attended a small Midwest convention called Starbase Indy. The stormed the stage in the middle of a Federation event and KAG was thrust into the limelight! In less than a year from its founding the membership grew to 220, with members in the US, Canada, Brazil, Italy, France, USSR and West Germany. By 1991 KAG had over 500 members. By 1992 membership was 1600. By 1993 the membership had grown to 2000, and by 1998 that number had doubled.

As of the year 2020 The Klingon Assault Group has 1000s of members in 36 countries around the globe.

Supreme Commander

The leader of KAG is known as the Supreme Commander. Before this, they were simply called “The” Thought-Admiral, which started to become confusing once there were multiple Thought-Admirals. When a warrior becomes the leader of KAG they are given the rank of Thought-Admiral and the honorific of epetai and will forever retain this rank after the position is passed on. That is why the separation between rank and position was made in 2019.

The KAG Civil War

As with any war, a civil war is not easy to tell. There are no tales of victories only tales of survival and lessons learned. Sometimes, there is not a clear good or bad “guy” only a difference of opinions. The information below was gathered from several sources. It is important to know what happened and hopefully learn how it happened so we do not repeat this division of warriors again.

The Dark Justice War

The Dark Justice war was a series of challenges the Klingon Assault Group and Star Fleet International completed with each other during the early 1990's. Named after the IKV Dark Justice that patrolled Pittsburg Pennsylvania. These challenges were between ships that were primarily with in the Central Eastern states. In this great war the Klingon Assault Group came out victorious! Click the picture below for the PDF that recounts the riviting tale.

Beginning Costuming – ‘Scanner 55 – 1999

Back in 1999, long before thoughts of becoming Thought-Admiral had crossed his mind, Qob! of House Hurric was leading the Cold Death Quadrant and had these thoughts to share on getting starting with costuming in KAG:

One of the more daunting aspects of becoming Klingon is looking the part. When people start they think that they need to look like Westmore did their makeup and Blackman did their costume. While this would really be cool and I think as you get into costuming you naturally try to look better and better, the attitude that if I don't look perfect I can't be Klingon is sadly mistaken. I'm reminded of watching high schools who try to start a drama department and concentrate on making the kids look right for the part rather than teaching them how to act. That's the key, to dress from the inside out.

Mindscanner Highlights is a new series of posts on KAG.org that looks back over the 100+ issues of Mindscanner, covering over 30 years, to find the articles that are still as important and useful today as they were when they were first written.
