When I was asked to take the reins of authority
in the Cold Terror Fleet two years ago, it was during a time of great turmoil
and division. It was a job I didn’t want, but was persuaded to take for the
good of KAG. At that time KAG had many commanders but few leaders. Kuuriis
was the new Thought Admiral and was not universally supported.
Since that time, under his leadership, there has
been a freedom for leaders to grow and develop. The list of good leaders
is too long for me to mention here. When I protested 2 years ago that I wasn’t
the man for the job, I didn’t want the job, etc., I was asked, “Well who
else can do it?”
Today there are alternatives. Also I have to say
that the job has cost me in my real life, personal sacrifices I don’t want
to make anymore. I am going to step down from the leadership of the CTF effective
on April 1, the anniversary of my taking the job. I will be taking a leave
of absence and GAFIAting (A fannish term meaning “getting away from it all”-
leaving fandom) for an indefinite period. I am giving this cat-herding job
to a man who in his short time here has become respected by all who have
worked with him. Captain Khatal sutai-H'aaWK (Chico Santiago) is an enthusiastic,
tireless worker who is creative and does an excellent job of involving people
and finding hidden talents in people. I knew for sure he was the man
for the job when, like all good leaders confronted with a promotion, he didn’t
want it! But we has embarrassing pictures!
There will be a transition period in his Quadrant,
the Cold Blood, but as always, I’m sure that there will be a good person
coming up to fill the void. The last few years have been a lot of fun, I’ve
met people both interesting and/or good, had experiences I’ll always remember
and grown in ways I hadn’t imagined; but the time has come for me to step
down and take a rest, to refresh myself and give attention to what I have
ignored. Qapla’!
