AER – 2/2/19 – IKV Predator at Indianapolis Children’s Museum

The Phoenix Rising Quadrant Commander Nayr and
Phoenix Rising Quadrant IXL Major Kavura invaded the Indianapolis Children’s
Museum for their stellar exhibit “Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds”.
The exhibit featured costumes and props from all eras of Star Trek. The exhibit
will last from February 2 through April 7. We were thrilled to have been there
on opening day! The Star Trek band Five Year Mission performed live. We’ve seen
them at cons. They are always super nice. They do original songs about original
Trek episodes. Some of their songs are hilarious! We have almost all their
cd’s.

Everything on display were the actual models, props, costumes, etc. used on the shows and
movies. We got to see the Enterprise NCC-1701, A, B, C, and D. Or perhaps you
would prefer to see a Klingon battle cruiser or a Romulan warbird. It was
amazing to see how much detail was put into them. The Deep Space 9 space station
model was wondrous. And imagine getting to see actual costumes worn onscreen.
There were TNG uniforms from both the first two seasons and the two-piece from
the third through fifth seasons. Up close you could see little seams and
textures that you just couldn’t see onscreen. The TOS uniform worn by Uhura had
an unusual zipper placement. The white Vulcan robe worn by Sonequa Martin-Green
on Discovery was just beautiful. L’Rell’s first season white costume was very
ornate. A bat’leth from TNG that must have been on loan from a proud warrior
hung gallantly on a wall. A Klingon mask from Star Trek VI exemplified the
vivid detail of Klingon Imperial ridges. There were also hand phasers from all
different Trek incarnations. The TOS helm console looked kind of worn. They
wanted to preserve it just as it was. Of course, to us Trekkers, it’s still a
sight to behold.

The exhibit wasn’t just for gazing. There were plenty of interactive activities. We
really enjoyed the settings where we could take selfies, such as a TOS
captain’s chair and a Borg regeneration chamber. Or perhaps you would like to
make a recording of yourself saying “KHAAAAAAAN!!!” Don’t have a
costume? Not to worry. They had a trunk full of Starfleet uniform tops for you
to wear in command yellow, science blue, or the dreaded red! But the best interactive
part was when we get to make a video of ourselves beaming down to a planet and
having a little Trek adventure! Our big finale was going to the museum’s
planetarium and seeing a video narrated by George Takei himself about how Star
Trek inspired so much technology that we have now. He even wore a long sleeve
yellow shirt in the video! It may have been a children’s museum, but it’s just as
much fun for grown kids!
